What to Know Before Booking a Phi Phi Island Boat Trip

Before booking a Phi Phi Island boat trip, compare more than the route and price. Ask about the boat, group size, safety equipment, protected-area access, weather changes and what the quoted price actually includes.

Two trips with similar destination lists can feel very different. A private long-tail boat offers more control over timing, while a shared speedboat usually follows a fixed route with more passengers. Neither option is automatically better. The right choice depends on your group, comfort priorities and the conditions on the day.

Start with the type of trip

Most visitors compare a private long-tail boat with a shared speedboat or another group excursion.

A private long-tail can suit couples, families or friends who value a flexible pace. You may have more say over departure time and how long to spend at each permitted stop. The trade-off is that a traditional boat is slower and can feel more exposed when the sea is choppy.

A shared speedboat generally covers more distance in less time. It can be useful if your preferred route includes several stops, but the itinerary and meeting time are usually less flexible. Ask for the maximum group size rather than judging the experience from promotional photos.

If anyone in your party has limited mobility, back problems, seasickness or difficulty climbing a boat ladder, explain this before paying. The boarding setup matters as much as the route.

Check the route, not just the destination names

A list that includes Maya Bay, Pi Leh Lagoon, Monkey Beach and Bamboo Island does not tell you how the day is divided. Ask:

  • where passengers board and finish;
  • how long is planned at each stop;
  • which stops are beach visits, viewpoints or snorkeling stops;
  • whether the route depends on tides, park access or sea conditions;
  • whether the operator may replace or omit a stop;
  • how much of the trip is spent travelling between places.

The existing Phi Phi island-hopping guide gives an overview of popular stops and the practical difference between a long-tail boat and a group speedboat. Use it as orientation, then verify the exact live itinerary with the operator.

Protected areas can introduce seasonal closures, visitor limits and changing access procedures. Do not rely on an old social post or assume that paying for a tour guarantees entry to every place named in the description.

Confirm the complete price

A low headline price may exclude costs that another operator includes. Ask for a written list covering:

  • national-park or protected-area fees;
  • snorkeling equipment;
  • life jackets in suitable sizes;
  • drinking water, snacks or meals;
  • hotel or pier transfers, if relevant;
  • accident insurance and its limits;
  • towels or dry bags;
  • cancellation or rescheduling charges.

Also ask what happens if you decide not to enter a paid protected area. Clear inclusions make different trips easier to compare and reduce awkward discussions at the meeting point.

Ask direct safety questions

A responsible operator should be able to explain the safety setup without vague reassurance. Confirm that the boat carries accessible life jackets for every passenger and ask whether child sizes are available when needed. Check where the safety briefing happens and who makes the final decision when wind, waves or thunderstorms affect the route.

For snorkeling, ask how guests are supervised, whether flotation aids are available and what support is offered to weak swimmers. Never treat a busy itinerary as a reason to enter the water when you are uncomfortable.

Weather is not a minor detail on the Andaman Sea. Operators may delay, shorten, reroute or cancel trips when conditions deteriorate. That can be frustrating, but a weather-based change is safer than pressuring a captain to keep an unsuitable plan.

Understand the cancellation policy

Read the operator’s current terms before payment. Look for separate rules covering:

  • operator cancellation for unsafe conditions;
  • customer cancellation or late arrival;
  • a route change after departure;
  • a rescheduled trip that no longer fits your travel dates;
  • refunds for park fees or other separately collected charges.

Do not assume “weather cancellation” always means an automatic cash refund. Some providers may offer a new date or credit, so ask what applies to your booking.

If you have a fixed ferry, flight or checkout immediately after the trip, tell the operator. A full-day excursion that returns close to an onward connection leaves little room for delays.

Choose a realistic departure time

An early departure can mean cooler conditions and a different crowd pattern, but it also requires a reliable meeting plan. Later trips may suit a relaxed morning, though afternoon weather can change quickly in some periods.

Your accommodation location also matters. Koh Phi Phi is car-free, and walking with beach gear takes longer in heat or rain. The Koh Phi Phi travel guide explains the central island layout and helps you judge the meeting point.

Confirm the final departure time and location the evening before, then check again on the morning of the trip. Keep the operator’s contact details available rather than relying only on a screenshot of the original listing.

Pack for the actual conditions

Bring sun protection, water, secure footwear and a waterproof way to carry your phone and essential documents. Reef-sensitive destinations require careful behavior: follow local instructions, avoid touching wildlife or coral, and do not leave litter behind.

For a rainy or windy forecast, add a light rain layer and a dry change of clothing. Secure loose items before the boat moves. If you are prone to seasickness, discuss appropriate precautions with a qualified medical professional before travel rather than trying an unfamiliar remedy at the pier.

Use local help, then make your own comparison

Blu Monkey Phi Phi Island’s official site says its Monkey Desk assists guests with transport and tours. The contact page is a useful place to confirm current assistance during your stay.

Ask the desk or any operator the same checklist questions so you can compare answers consistently. A good booking is not the one with the longest destination list. It is the one whose route, inclusions, safety approach and change policy match the needs of your group.
